IP Address and Subnet Configuration on ADSL Network

Access to Router on Speedy ADSL Modem

1. Connect your computer to network via UTP cable or Wifi
2. Open Web browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla
3. On address bar, write the following address
          http://192.168.1.1/       * It's depend on default configuration by manufacturrer
4. Enter username and password
   Example :   username= admin, password= (empty)
                   or username= admin, password = admin* It's depend on default configuration by manufacturrer
   
5. Open the DHCP Server Section.

Default DHCP Server configurationon Speedy ADSL Modem

Ussually, default configuration for speedy :

• IP address for local : 192.168.1.1
• DHCP ip address client start from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254
• Subnet : 255.255.255.0
• Gateway for client : 192.168.1.1
• Preferred DNS Server :  202.134.0.155
                    or  192.168.1.1
  
• Alternate DNS Server: 202.134.2.5
  

Subnet

Subnet mask is required by network for routing LAN acces to WAN Access. Default subnet on C Class IP Address configuration is 255.255.255.0. It's allow network to broadcast to 254 IP Address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254. IP number 192.168.1.0 and 192.168.1.255 is used by network.

Case study:

Computer Lab of SMAN 38 Jakarta have 42 computer unit. Using the software calculator (Taskbar: start - program - accesories - calculator ) in scientific mode (menu: view - scientific), number 42 in decimal converted into binary. The result  is 101010 in binary, it's contains 6 digit. Therefore, the subnet mask is  = 11111111.11111111.11111111.11000000. (last 6 digit is 0)                                      or           = 255.255.255.192

Subnet mask 255.255.255.0    contains 254 IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254. Subnet mask 255.255.255.128 contains 126 IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.126.Subnet mask 255.255.255.192  contains 62 IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.62.Subnet mask 255.255.255.224  contains 30 IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.30.Subnet mask 255.255.255.240  contains 14 Ip address 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.14.
